Today I finished reading the first chapter of my module book. It’s labelled as TM111 Book 1, part 1 of block 1 or equivalent to week 1 according to the module guide.

Elaine Thomas, the author, writes in a very easy to read and relatable style. Of course, being the very first chapter, the content is fairly brief and generic, serving as a good introduction to the computer world and its digital universe.

For example, she skimmed over some general terminology and how much the digital world is ingrained in daily life. Also outlining pros and cons of the digital age; including dangers and risks when it comes to one’s personal data, how to protect yourself and your device.

Personally, I had to remind myself a few times that it is indeed just that: the introduction, as my impatience and hunger for knowledge attempted to interfere. I am sure it won’t be this easy all the time, well aware there are (and should be) challenges ahead. As I am not completely new to the computer world and had several weeks now listening to Cyber-podcasts, I feel quite ready to delve right into the subject in more detail.

Our module website opens on 8th September 2026, when we hopefully find out more about the course itself, who our tutors are etc. So far, I must say, for a complete novice to OU studies, I am slightly frustrated about how much info is withheld. The OU doesn’t seem very forthcoming with what the future looks like, until last minute. So I have no idea how it will all pan out. What are these tutorials like? Are they Zoom/Teams conferences with all students of this module or one-to-ones? How frequent are they? How flexible or not will it fit around my work and family commitments? Without that info, it is hard to get organised and plan ahead. I really hope I will have a bit more to work with on Tuesday.
